The Région Sud announces a grant of €15 million for CARBON

The Région Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur has made a significant announcement regarding CARBON, as it pledges a grant of €15 million to support the project. The decision was made during the plenary assembly held on June 23, 2023. This financial support is great news for the establishment of CARBON’s photovoltaic factory gigafactory in Fos-sur-Mer.

Continued Support From Région Sud For CARBON

“With the announcement of an initial public subsidy, the Région Sud is fulfilling its commitments to a project that will have a great impact on the region.” (Pierre-Emmanuel MARTIN, President of CARBON)”

From the outset, the Région Sud and all local authorities have demonstrated continuous support. This territorial cooperation has been crucial in CARBON’s choice of the Région Sud for the location of its first giga-factory.

With the creation of 3,000 direct and sustainable jobs, the City of Fos-sur-Mer and neighboring municipalities, the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, the Aix-Marseille Provence Metropolis, the Région Sud, and the State services have worked hand in hand to ensure the establishment of CARBON’s first giga-factory in the region. The alignment of public stakeholders, coupled with the Région Sud’s designation as a pioneering territory for ecological planning in France, has proven to be decisive factors.

CARBON’s project fully aligns with the Région Sud’s ambitions for energy transition and economic attractiveness. This has led the Région Sud’s to strongly support the project and vote for this €15 million grant to bolster its development.

Pierre-Emmanuel Martin expresses his gratitude, stating, “We extend our sincere appreciation to all the elected officials and regional services involved, particularly President Renaud Muselier, for their dedication and proactive support.”

Moreover, in a delightful turn of events, CMA CGM, an international player based in Marseille, has expressed a few days later its intent to invest in the industrial company.

CARBON plans to lay the foundation stone of its giga-factory in the second half of 2024, at the Marseille-Fos Port. Once operational, the facility will produce 5 GW of photovoltaic cells and 3.5 GW of modules, integrating the core of the PV value chain from ingots to modules. The project aligns with France and Europe’s goals of transitioning to renewable energy sources while bolstering industrial sovereignty.

This is currently the largest announcement of a French and European solar giga-factory. In fact, the total investment earmarked for the project exceeds €1.5 billion.
